The Story
Better Men Elsewhere is an American thriller with a dash of the supernatural, magical realism, and rural fantasy. Follow Jason Miranda, a prisoner sentenced to the mysterious mountain town of Coventry for 10 years for his crimes. Coventry is not your usual town and it is not your usual prison. While the townsfolk must cope with a convicted criminal in their midst as part of this unconventional arrangement, Jason must also have his wits about him as he traverses this even stranger, upside down and mysterious corner of the world.
The World
The world of Better Men Elsewhere is very similar to our own with a few quirks such as a population of invisible people, towns that can act as hosts for prisoners, and unusual headstones. Within this magical realistic world is the even stranger and wilder rural town of Coventry. Cannibal tenants, murderous governors, a forbidden lake, anachronistic technology, and so much more await Jason in this labyrinth of a mountain town as he tries to make the most of his 10-year sentence.
The Main Characters
Jason Miranda - played by Jonathan Price
Jason is a scarred convict sentenced to Coventry. He has little patience for those he sees below himself but is willing to punch up to those who have authority over him. He desperately seeks a simple life but cannot escape his past.
Finnegan (aka “Finn”) - played by Max Vitkus
Finn is an invisible young man who lives in the same hostel as Jason. Self-conscious and a little shy, yet adventurous at heart, Finn sets out to find his own way in life.
Lucia - played by Sara Jane Palmer
The cheerful and hospitable Lucia hides an unnerving and battle-worn psyche. She is the owner and landlord of the hostel in which Jason stays during his sentence in Coventry. One minute she can be your mother-figure, the next she could chop your head off if you pose a threat to her or her tenants.
Yusef Urie - played by Steven Landes (after the pilot); by Sebastian Ruiz Hernandez (pilot only)
Governor-to-be and the son of the recently deposed governor, Yusef is a calm and collected man with questionable ambitions. He is very warm and welcoming, but he knows his place in the food chain; he expects that everyone else understand their own.
